Peppermint White Chocolate Mocha–250 – 580 cal

Starbucks mocha drinks are espresso-based, made with two different chocolate sauces. Regular mocha sauce and white chocolate mocha sauce are both completely different products.

If you’re pairing your mocha with something to eat, the Breakfast Menu has quick options starting at ~$2.75 that go well alongside any mocha.

Mocha sauce uses cocoa processed with alkali, which neutralizes the natural acidity of raw cocoa and produces a smoother, darker, less bitter chocolate flavor. This is what goes into the Caffè Mocha and Peppermint Mocha.

White chocolate mocha sauce contains no cocoa at all. It’s made from white chocolate, which is cocoa butter, sugar, and milk, giving it a creamy, vanilla-like sweetness that’s higher in calories than the dark mocha sauce.

The White Chocolate Mocha isn’t just a “sweeter mocha”. It’s generally a different sauce with a different taste.

All mocha drinks are topped with whipped cream. If you skip the whipped cream, you save ~80 to ~100 calories per drink.

It is the original. Espresso, made with bittersweet mocha sauce, steamed milk, and whipped cream.

ItemPriceCalories
Caffè Mocha (Short 8 fl oz)$5.69200 cal
Caffè Mocha (Tall 12 fl oz)$5.80290 cal
Caffè Mocha (Grande 16 fl oz)$6.24370 cal
Caffè Mocha (Venti 20 fl oz)$6.57450 cal

The Short at ~$5.69 is the best value entry point. Contains 200 calories, the same mocha flavor, and is cheaper than any other size drinks.

At 2 espresso shots in both Short and Tall, you’re getting the same caffeine in the smaller size for less money and fewer calories.

Caffeine per size

Short/Tall = ~150 mg (2 shots)

Grande = ~150 mg (2 shots)

Venti = ~225 mg (3 shots)

It’s a Caffè Mocha with peppermint syrup added in. It is a seasonal drink, but it is available at most U.S. locations for most of the year. The mint comes from peppermint syrup, not extract. It’s sweeter and less sharp than natural peppermint.

If you’re watching calories, the Tall Peppermint Mocha is the smarter size choice here.

Peppermint Mocha is Starbucks’ highest-selling seasonal drink by volume.

It is a white chocolate mocha sauce with peppermint syrup. It is richer, sweeter, and higher in calories than the standard Peppermint Mocha. Exact prices are not confirmed because the price varies by location and state.

Peppermint White Chocolate Mocha (Short 8 fl oz)–250 cal
Peppermint White Chocolate Mocha (Tall 12 fl oz)–560 cal
Peppermint White Chocolate Mocha (Grande 16 fl oz)–480 cal
Peppermint White Chocolate Mocha (Venti 20 fl oz)–580 cal

There is no cocoa. It is mainly made with white chocolate sauce, espresso, and steamed milk. It is sweeter and creamier than the Caffè Mocha, with a noticeably higher calorie-per oz ratio due to the fat content in white chocolate sauce.

White Chocolate Mocha (Tall 12 fl oz)$6.48290 cal
White Chocolate Mocha (Grande 16 fl oz)$7.02390 cal
White Chocolate Mocha (Venti 20 fl oz)$7.35480 cal

At Grande size, the White Chocolate Mocha has 20 more calories than the Caffè Mocha at the same size and costs ~$0.78 more. The price difference comes entirely from the white chocolate sauce, which is a premium ingredient relative to standard mocha sauce.

It’s the blended version. Made with coffee, mocha sauce, milk, ice, and whipped cream. No espresso shots are used in the Frappuccino roast. It is a concentrated coffee blend that’s slightly weaker per ounce than full espresso.

Mocha Frappuccino (Tall 12 fl oz)~$5.95290 cal
Mocha Frappuccino (Grande 16 fl oz)~$6.48370 cal
Mocha Frappuccino (Venti 24 fl oz)~$6.95470 cal

Caffeine in the Mocha Frappuccino Grande is approximately 95 mg lower than the hot Caffè Mocha Grande (~150 mg).

Because the Frappuccino roast is less concentrated than full espresso shots.

Below is how you can customize your mocha to your own choice.

Reduce calories fast:

  • Skip the whipped cream, you save 80 to 100 calories on any mocha drink
  • Nonfat milk → saves 40–60 calories per Grande
  • If you skip the nonfat milk, you can save up to 40- 60 calories per Grande
  • Fewer pumps of mocha sauce save you approximately 25 calories per pump

Upgrade options:

  • Add vanilla sweet cream cold foam instead of whipped cream. Because it contains fewer calories than whipped cream, and has a better texture in iced versions
  • Add a pump of hazelnut syrup to a Caffè Mocha. It is a common barista-recommended pairing that adds depth without overpowering the chocolate.

Both drinks have chocolate. Both have milk. The only difference is espresso. Caffè Mocha contains espresso shots and is a coffee drink.

Starbucks Hot Chocolate uses the same mocha sauce and steamed milk but has zero espresso and zero coffee caffeine.

If you want the chocolate flavor without caffeine, order a Hot Chocolate. If you want the caffeine with the chocolate flavor, order the Caffè Mocha. Same sauce, same milk, completely different taste.

The Starbucks mocha menu covers four different drinks, including: Caffè Mocha, Peppermint Mocha, Peppermint White Chocolate Mocha, and White Chocolate Mocha. Each one is made on a different sauce bases that produce genuinely different flavors.

The sauce. Mocha sauce uses Dutch-process cocoa, dark, slightly bitter, and chocolatey. White chocolate mocha sauce has no cocoa at all; it’s white chocolate.

It’s primarily a holiday seasonal drink, but many U.S. Starbucks locations carry peppermint syrup year-round.

The Short (8 fl oz) Caffè Mocha at 200 calories, ordered with no whipped cream, brings it down to approximately 110 to 120 calories.

A Tall or Grande Caffè Mocha has approximately 150 mg of caffeine from 2 espresso shots. A Venti has approximately 225 mg from 3 shots.
