What Are Starbucks Refreshers?
They launched Refreshers drinks in 2012 as an alternative for people who want a caffeine boost without the taste of coffee. The caffeine doesn’t come from brewed beans. It comes from green coffee extract, made from unroasted 100% arabica beans.
This is a completely different process from how traditional Espresso drinks get their kick.
Each drink is hand-shaken with ice and real freeze-dried fruit pieces, not just juice. The Strawberry Açaà version gets actual freeze-dried strawberries shaken in; the Mango Dragonfruit gets real dragonfruit pieces.
The 2026 Energy Refreshers
In early 2026, Starbucks added a new drink to its menu called Energy Refreshers. These are different than a regular refresher.
Regular Refreshers contain approximately 45–55 mg of caffeine per Grande. The Energy Refreshers bring that up to 125 mg per Grande and up to 175 mg in larger sizes, all from extra pumps of the green coffee extract blend.
Still well under what you’d get from drinks on the Starbucks Iced Coffee Menu, where cold brew options push past 200 mg per serving.
The Energy Refreshers range from 100 mg to 175 mg of caffeine, depending on size. It’s more than a single espresso shot (75 mg), though still well under a Tall Pike Place brewed coffee, which runs 235-290 mg.
Three Energy Refresher flavors are currently on the menu: Strawberry AçaÃ, Mango Dragonfruit, and a Mango Strawberry blend with coconut milk. You can also order any Refresher caffeine-free
Caffeine by Size – Standard Refreshers
Below are the actual caffeine quantities in each size of drink, so you can order confidently:
| Size | Caffeine |
| Tall (12 oz) | ~35 – 45 mg |
| Grande (16 oz) | ~45 – 55 mg |
| Venti (24 oz) | ~70 – 85 mg |
| Trenta (30 oz) | ~90 – 110 mg |
A single espresso shot is 75 mg. A Grande Refresher is lighter than one shot. The Energy Refresher Grande at 125 mg is about 1.5 shots.
Customization Options At Starbucks
Baristas can make more changes to your Refreshers than most people realize:
Swap the liquid base:
- Water-based (default): lightest calorie option
- Lemonade: adds ~50-60 calories per Grande
- Coconut milk: adds ~50 calories, makes it creamy (this is how you get Pink Drink and Dragon Drink)
- “Light base”: half the usual base syrup, which cuts sugar significantly
Add or adjust inclusions:
- You can ask to add extra freeze-dried fruit pieces to your drink
- Ask for more or less ice
- Add other fruit, like blackberries or mango chunks, to your refresher drink
Adjust caffeine:
- You can order any standard Refresher caffeine-free by asking for no green coffee extract
- You can also upgrade to the Energy Refresher base for 125 mg+ caffeine
Canned vs. In-Store: Not the Same Drink
The canned Refreshers sold in grocery stores are made by PepsiCo and are different from the in-store version in a few ways.
The canned version is carbonated and includes ginseng and B vitamins, while also using coconut water as a base ingredient. Caffeine is still from green coffee extract at about 50 mg per 12 oz can.
Flavors (Black Cherry Limeade, Peach Passionfruit, Strawberry Lemonade) also don’t match the in-store menu exactly.
If you’re comparing it to what you’ve had at the store, the can gives you a different experience.
Conclusion
The Refreshers lineup covers a wider range than most people expect. Refresher menu included the classic 45 mg caffeine water-based drinks, to the new 125-175 mg Energy Refreshers that compete directly with coffee drinks.
The main flavors included (Strawberry AçaÃ, Mango Dragonfruit, Pineapple Passionfruit) stay on the permanent menu all year, while seasonal options are introduced and gone in no time.
You can order any Refresher without caffeine; the “light base” customization cuts sugar significantly, and the canned version is a different product from what baristas make in-store. If you’re ordering for the first time.
The standard Strawberry Açaà or Mango Dragonfruit at Grande size is a solid starting point for you. If you want more of an energy drink effect.
